PhotoStory: Paris Hilton as Barbie

Meet Paris Hilton as Barbie (TM).

The brainchild of a day without exams; patented by Bitchy Ideas Ltd and sold by Mattel, Paris Hilton as Barbie (TM) comes complete with chihuahua, 'get out of jail free' card, sex tape and "Prison Diaries: An Autobiography."

And now, Just a Girl presents...The Life and Adventures of Paris Hilton as Barbie (TM)!

Barbie is in her final year of schooling...after years of distraction (mainly in the form of boys), she finally decides she needs to study in order to pass, as her IB co-ordinator (the same, misleading man who convinced her she could do IB in the first place) continually warns her that she is an SAR - Student At Risk (of Failing the Diploma).

Barbie attends her school formal, also known as the Apocalypse Ball. Unfortunately, Barbie had a little too much to drink, and indulged in some girl-on-girl action, that happened to be caught on tape. Embarrassingly enough, this footage was circulated around the school and the Internet via MySpace, Facebook and YouTube. Most boys, however, simply think it's "hot" and in the end, Barbie wins - boys, that is.

Barbie decides that she needs to apply to university, and applies to several Fashion Design courses in both Australia and the US, on a whim after attending a talk about studying in the US by accident one lunchtime at school, and being "scouted" by the cute admissions guy...what was his name again?!

Barbie sits 15 exams at the end of the year - most of them hungover. When she has left school (finally!) she flies off to the sunny shores of Hawaii to spend time with her cousins; beaching, tanning, flirting, shopping. She falls in love many times over, and is often mistaken for her younger sister, Nicki, or, (while at parties) her unrelated friend Tara Reid.

Surprising everyone (including herself), Barbie is Dux of the school and is offered a scholarship to Princeton, which she accepts. She begins a major in History. Thanks to the power of the Internet, Barbie has made many friends before she arrives, through Facebook and networking fellow Princeton undergrads. She is immensely popular and well-liked when she arrives, although she quickly makes the mistake of offending the wrong people, and soon has some very jealous and bitchy enemies who will stop at nothing for revenge. Over the course of the year, she is egged, spat on, tripped, and is the butt of a very unpleasant rumour about what she does in "tutes" with her English professor...She also narrowly avoids arrest on several occasions for DUI (nobody quite knows how she escaped arrest...although it was always heavily speculated that it involved "favours" of some kind.)

To console herself, Barbie throws herself a little bit too hard into the more attractive aspects of university life - namely, the social scene. She flunks her first year, loses her scholarship and drops out. With no money and nowhere to go, she is forced to go into modelling - specifically, modelling for the hateful IB. It pays the rent...until the video from her formal is marketed by a bitter ex-boyfriend, and she is approached by film and reality TV directors alike and offered big cash to go naked.

Barbie, however, (strongly advised by her mother, who threatens to cut off her inheritance if she doesn't) refuses all and flees to somewhere in Northern Russia where they don't have the Internet and she can escape her reputation. As she is foreign, she is treated like a god, and her stark beauty - particularly in contrast to the natives - earns her many modelling jobs, which she enjoys. She meets her boyfriend on the job - he's an underwear model, and also a foreigner (American) - who she marries at 23. They move to Greece where Barbie becomes famous for designing lingerie. They have 3 children, and live sexily every after.

Don't you just love it how Barbie manages to look particularly bitchy in every photo? My favourite is the first photo - it's such a "I know you're looking at me, and I know why; I'm just so gorgeous. I know you wish you looked just like me" smirk. Who knew plastic came with attitude?

Times Like These: Memories

All these sunny, spring days are making me think about how much I'll miss this place when I'm gone. Seriously. I know I complain about it, but then I remember all the "fun in the sun" - summer here is just so beautiful and enjoyable. Much more so than winter. Everyone's outside on the ovals, tanning, reading, talking, playing. I suppose uni will like that too...but not the same.

So I was reminiscing, and thinking about Gaby's post about her top 10 sad songs, which led me to think about my own top 10s - in particular, songs that remind me of people or places. And the result of that was this list of memories:

Dove and Real Beauty

I'm posting this video because I passionately believe that the media's unnecessary distortion of reality and beauty is what leads to young girls, actresses and models alike feeling insecure about themselves and not skinny or pretty enough. It's all fake and someone else's idea of beauty. I fully support Dove's "Real Beauty" campaign, which is based around real sized girls and natural beauty. Body image is one of the most disturbing and tragic issues of our time, and we need to be the ones to stand up and say "this isn't beautiful, it's flirting-with-death-thin and skin-on-bones-ugly." Beauty isn't just about what you look like; it's about your health and your happiness.

I'm not going to act like I'm all "at one" with my body; I'm not. It helps that I'm naturally skinny, and my friends tell me this all the time, and I know it. But we all have fat days, or ugly days. When we're surrounded by the media's "measuring stick" of beauty, it's hard to realise that beauty isn't about an ideal or certain specifications; it's about being real and being comfortable who you are. In the wise words of Sir Mix-a-lot: 36-24-36?...Only if she's 5" 3'! You don't have to love every aspect of what you look like (I know I don't!) - it's about being able to respect and admire your body as a whole.

I'd also like to add I'm not trying to preach in any way, shape or form, because I know that I probably can't understand the despair and self-loathing of an eating disorder, but I hate to watch my friends say "OMG I'm so fat" when they're not, and I hate to watch other girls suffer from society's conventions.

Last Hurrah: Cross Country

Yesterday I ran my last ever compulsory cross country. Oh joyous day! Only 3km, and it was quite a nice day. I still have to do athletics, but athletics are mostly fun. No more running unless I really want to! (And no doubt I will in order to keep fit...but at my own pace, and my own time!)

Yesterday I also found out about a bizarre love triangle in the boarding house that you'd only expect to read about Paris Hilton in a trashy magazine....SO, the story goes that Miss L broke up with her boyfriend, Mr X, two days ago. She sends around one of those love calculator forwards in which you type your top three crushes. The joke is, these names are sent back to your friend. Miss L sends it to her good friend, Miss H, who writes Mr X (her crush and Miss L's two day old ex) as number 1. Miss L receives notifications this via email. Miss H realises that Miss L knows, and pretends it's all a joke, but Miss L isn't having a word of it - apparently, Miss H has been making moves on Mr X in our common room of late...

I love the bitchy gossip of a boarding house. It's so entertaining.

Say it Right

Don't you just love those people who say all the things you want to hear - but they mean it? Sincerely? Those people are supposed to be your friends...but I find that they are my grandparents. I love my grandparents to pieces; they're generous, kind, honest, and genuinely caring, loving people. I've rung them twice this week, because they're visiting, and we had such positive, uplifting conversations. I can talk to my grandmother about anything - we have D&Ms quite frequently. And she's always telling me how proud she is of how I do academically, and how I'll have my pick of universities (and I keep saying "I hope so!"). It's so sweet and reassuring. And my grandfather is so considerate. They both just make me smile. I love spending time with them. Hopefully I'll be doing a lot more of that in 3 months' time (!) but nothing is certain. Yet.

On another, equally happy note - no more sanctions! A collective decision, as made by our HoH and the prefects (i.e. me) because
  1. The money hasn't been returned (which would be expected if the theif was going to return, as the weekend is the ideal time to get the money)
  2. It's getting bitchy and tense within the house
  3. People are starting to blame the person whose money was stolen (saying "she lost it")
  4. People are getting sick and sleep deprived.

So...we've decided it's people's own repsonsibility to lock up their valuables, because if you lock it up, it can't get stolen (well, that's the idea.) The two halves of the stealing equation are - "if you leave it out, you're liable to theft" but "people shouldn't steal anyway, whether it's lying around or not."

To Miss AW (TJW) and Miss SM - I don't know how I missed you again at today's Open day - which was really too bad! - but we'll work something out. Eventually. Even if it is in 3 months!

To Miss MB - it was a lovely surprise to see you and catch up today! Hopefully more of the same, although I know I'll be seeing you at the formal! Can't wait!

[I'm much happier now!]

The Good, the Bad, the Bitchy, and the Downright Shocking

The good is my progress report. "High quality" for quality of work in all subjects except Maths, which was "satisfactory;" "always completed" for prep in all subjects and "positive" for attitude and behaviour in all my classes. Something to be proud of and happy about, at least.

The bad is practise exams next week. I'm scared of just walking into an exam (e.g. history, which is all essay questions) and looking at the paper and going "Holy mierda, I can't answer any of these questions." And I know it's not the real thing, and I know that it doesn't count for anything, and I know that it doesn't indicate how I'll go at the end of the year, but it's scary nonetheless. And any kind of exam tends to suck in general. Although it frees up my time a bit for the next two weeks. I even, God forbid, have a whole day off next Thursday. Unprecedented. And the best part is was that yr 12s were going to have in house breakfasts for the next two weeks, which means that we could sleep in, particularly if we don't have any exams in the morning. But thanks to sanctions, that probably won't happen, unless the bitch thief pays up before then. I'm not optimistic about the chance, but I'm hoping.

The bitchy is sanctions.

(This is a vent. I am whining and cranky. I know it. I know I have a lot to be thankful for in my life, but in this moment, let me have my gripe, and I will move on.)

Imagine.

You must sit for one hour.

Without doing anything. At. All.

You must sit in a room for one hour without any form of entertainment. At. All.

You must sit in a room for one hour without being able to lie down and sleep. At. All.

You must sit in a room for one hour without speaking to anyone else. At. All.

See how this works? It's a good punishment because it's so incredibly awful. Yr 12s are allowed to bring work, but otherwise I can't see what you'd do. Although I noticed some people
  • making nooses out of a shoelace
  • balancing mandarins on their head
  • playing with a pool ball

No form of entertainment.

No lying down or sleeping.

No speaking.

One hour.

Twice a day.

6.30-7.30 AM

6-7 PM

Sanctions (which stem from stealing) are not only a unbearable waste of time and energy but they make people bitchy. The house is bitchy. Everyone is complaining about sanctions and collectively hating whoever stole the money (and they are the biggest bitch of all.)

The shocking is rape of a teenage girl in a suburb not far from hear, known for it's notoriety and being poor. This is the report in the local paper, which I heard about twice today before reading it for myself [edited to maintain anonymity]:

POLICE last night mounted a large-scale manhunt after a 15-year-old girl was raped at knife point.
The teen was walking home after playing netball at the nearby Leisure Centre when she was attacked in a park about 7.40pm.
Detective Senior Constable said the teen was alone when a man appeared from the darkness and threatened her.
"She was by herself when a male came out of the bushes armed with a knife. He grabbed the girl and threatened her with the knife, threw her to the ground and raped her,'' Det Sen-Constable said.
"She had been playing netball at the centre and was close to home (when the attack occurred).''
Det Sen-Constable said police were yet to formally speak to the teen, who was rushed to the Royal Children's Hospital for urgent counselling and treatment.
"She's pretty traumatised, as are her parents. She's been taken to a unit of the Royal Children's Hospital for rape and sexual assault victims, to be assessed,'' he said.
More than a dozen officers were called in to search the streets for the alleged attacker, who was believed to be on foot.
The officers combed the streets for more than four hours, while a police dog also assisted during the exhaustive search.

It's just so incredibly awful and devastating to even read or think about. Rape would have to be one of my biggest fears above all others. It's one of the fates worse than death. It deeply saddens me that this girl was only 15 (though it's heart-wrenching at any age) and so close to where she lived. And it's frightful to think this is streets away from the school. We're not exactly in a safer suburb, either. The Foreshore is such a disreputable area for shady people (i.e. perverts) and there have enough been incidents involving men chasing girls that we're not allowed to run or walk or be on the Foreshore by ourselves by school rule. And you wouldn't want to be there at night, either.

All in all a fairly depressing week, but tomorrow is Experiment Day, which means only two classes (and the rest of the day off to write up prac reports) and on the weekend I'm going into Melbourne to another open Day (Melbourne Uni). I'm also going to the year 11 play tomorrow night, which will hopefully be funny.

[in summary, I am not depressed, just completely and utterly irritated beyond belief by sanctions and the emotional strain that goes with it. I'm coping though, don't worry!]

Last Hurrah: Exeat

Last weekend was my last exeat ever. The last time I'll catch the XPT back to school. The last time I'll have a ton of work and three days to do it. The last time I have to go home for a short space of time, only to return to work and worry and the hectic nature of school life. The end is in sight! 5 weeks left of term. 5! And then 5 weeks next term. 10 weeks of school left! And 2 weeks of intense, stressful revision (a.k.a holidays.)

But three months from today, I will be finished. Finished with work and IAs and exams and stress and due dates and everything. Finished with the Dining Hall and compulsory Chapel and School Assemblies. Leaving my boarding house, my friends, my teachers. Those will be the things I miss (granted, not all of my teachers, but some.) Leaving my HoH. Leaving my brother to finish his last two years here alone. I think I'll miss this school more than I realise, more than I can probably imagine right now.

But I can't wait. Because in three months from now, the rest of my life begins. Three months from now, I will be sleeping in, reading all day, lounging around in my pyjamas, enjoying home cooking - and I can't wait. It will be a grand reward for thirteen years of hard work (OK, so only about half of those years were hard work...mostly the last two!), and I plan to reward myself well. Hopefully with some travelling and spending time with friends...who knows?

Everybody Hurts

We all feel vulnerable.

We all cry.

We all feel insecure.

We all doubt ourselves.

The difference is, we don't make a big deal about it.

We cope, and move on.

That's the difference between you and me.

Between me and her.

Emphasis on her.

Sometimes we can't cope.

That's when we need each other.

But sometimes you've just got to get over it and pull yourself back on your feet; someone else can't always do it for you.

* * * * *

But perhaps there's a chance for us yet?

For me and him, I mean.

Perhaps...

Stealing's a Bitch

Someone in our boarding house has stolen over $150 from 2 girls.

I hate them. Whoever they are.

You might think it's difficult to hate someone if you don't know who they are, but it's not. Not when the whole house will be punished with early mornings and hours of sitting in the common room, doing nothing, next week if the thief doesn't pay the money back. Not when you start to think that someone, someone in this house is low down and selfish enough to betray the trust of everyone else. Not when our year group has suffered from stealing every year since yr 10, and we've been subjected to a room search every year because of it. Not when we might be searched again. Not when yr 12s have practise exams next week. Not when we're already had stealing last term, and nearly went on sanctions for it then.

Stealing is downright base; contemptible, mean-spirited, and lacking human decency. In a girls' boarding house, this is known as bitchiness; malicious, spiteful and inconsiderate.

I Can't Talk, But I Can Blog

I've lost my voice. It's gone; looking for warmer weather on strike it doesn't want to do the English oral tomorrow. Now, however, as I have laryngitis, I have been granted a D2 form* for temporary illness, and "will complete my oral commentary when my voice has fully returned" (says my IB co-ordinator.)

Timeline of events:
Sunday: headache, very lethargic
Monday: morning - congested, sore ears; afternoon - begin to lose voice (becomes husky)
Tuesday: no voice
Wednesday: no voice

Yesterday I was in the sick bay all day, sleeping (between going to the yr 12 and debating photos) but I managed to escape return to house last night. Today was similarly spent in bed, but in house, which is much nicer.

I've never had laryngitis before, but I remember being, oh, maybe 10, with my mother, and we were shopping in town when we met another woman and her daughter, who we knew. The daughter was gesturing what she wanted, and I asked why she was doing that - couldn't she speak? Her mother explained that she had laryngitis.

It is so incredibly frustrating not being able to speak! I've tried sign language, but it just doesn't cut it (generally because the other person can't understand what I'm trying to say.) All I can do is whisper or croak. It's also quite annoying that I've been cooped up the past two days, because they've been absolutely glorious - blue skies, warm sun, green grass. I'm just glad it's exeat on Friday; I can go home, relax, sleep, eat, visit my grandparents (who are staying with us) - but I can't avoid work. Damn.

Smack!

NB: No, not the drug. Or as in spank. Smack as in the sound of a person hitting a solid object or thing.

Over the past week, I have seen two very amusing smacks. The first was a year 10 boy who I saw walking along the sidewalk, kicking a soccer ball amongst his friends. He attempted some kind of fancy kick, but fell flat on his bottom on the concrete path (I was on the other side of the road, trying not to laugh). The second, which still brings me to laugh now, was a year 10 girl who ran smack-bang into a glass door. The thing is, it's the door into our common room, which isn't entirely glass (it has a wooden frame) and she uses it every day, so it's not like she forgot or couldn't see it. She just ran at the door and forgot to open it before she hit it, I guess. All we could see from the inside was her cheek up against the glass. Hysterical.

[This sounds sadistic, but it's not. I simply find it funny that I have seen two such incidents in a week. And they're both yr 10. Hmm...]

Casual Clothes Day

I love casual clothes days at school. Apart from the whole "what am I going to wear?" angst, and the whole extra "people are going to judge me" factor, it's quite interesting to see what other people wear (I'm not judging them; just what they wear!)

At this school, known for it's "trackies and thongs" trend, and generally trackies wear all year round, I think there are two kinds of casual clothes categories (and associated attitudes); casual (I couldn't care less) and fashionable (I'm making an effort). Casual is the girl wearing trackies tucked into her flats. Fashionable is the girl who was wearing navy skinny jeans, a cute, black 3/4 length sleeve jacket cape and white shirt this morning, and the same jeans, electric blue sweater and bright red patent shoes (with a tiny heel) this afternoon. She could pull it off (and look like she wasn't really trying.) And then there's the boys, a category unto themselves. Skinny leg jeans on girls generally look great (especially with a loose sweater or hoody) - but on most guys, they just make me laugh. They just seem so...flamboyant? pretentious? wannabe? posing? I mean, skinny leg jeans weren't designed for guys! (I totally agree with this guy's t-shirt!) I mean, what self-respecting guy wears skinny jeans, for goodness sake? They're just not masculine! (OK, so it's probably not the jeans I have a problem with so much as they guys wearing them; but in general, guys should avoid them.)

In less bitchy news, I'm going to see Harry Potter 5 on the weekend, and am really excited about it! I still haven't read the 7th book, but I will next weekend (exeat), after my English oral!

And in other school related affairs, I have finished and handed in my TOK Essay! Thank goodness - it's such a huge relief. I'm not stressing over it like I was the EE. But like the EE, it's this huge anti-climax; we've done a year and a half of classes to write a 1200-1600 word essay and a 10 minute oral, and when they're finished, it's over (hello, study periods spares!). I was actually really happy with the final product though (exactly 1600 words! - I love it when the word count works out like that!); thanks to Miss CM for helping me with my "personal voice." That's not to say it wasn't a load of mierda (it was) - but it was well written mierda!

A Modern Take on King Lear

In the midst of frantic revision of King Lear, Whitman, Woolf and Conrad for next week's unseen English oral, I was sent this by a friend, as her own interpretation of Act 1, Sc. 1;

Act 1 scene 1:

Lear: Hey babes, want some land?

Kids: Heck yes daddy!!!

Lear: OK then, say I’m hot…

Gonie: You are like… totally way hot dad!!! Any of the mums at medieval school would do you…

Lear: Cha ching!!! What about you Reggie?

Reggie: Hey pappa, well forget the mums at school… anyone would tap that… you are like SOOO hot!

Lear: I guess so….What about you Cordial?

Cordial: Dad you are ugly

Lear: Bitch

Cordial: Psyche!!!

The end

If I get this passage, I will laugh so hard! The best part is, it actually is an extremely modern/cool/hip (etc) "adaptation" of Lear - Paris Hilton style!

What would Shakespeare think?

This in mind; who's the bitch - Lear or Cordial Cordelia?

Hypnosis or Hype?

(Circle desired option or insert own other)
Tonight I had the pleasure/delight/agony of seeing hypnosis/hysteria/pretence in action with a fully qualified hypnotist/pervert/comedian.

It was hilarious/sickening/enthralling to watch as people humiliated themselves/thrived on the attention/acted under hypnosis.

I don't think any one answer is right; tonight's "hypnotic performance" was pretty much a combination of the three in each instance. It was uproariously funny, but at times very painful (to the point of vomit-inducing) to watch two of yr 12's biggest show offs/actors "faking it" in front of practically the rest of the school.

The show was good; light, sound, a huge personality running the show who knew how to engage with the audience. It's just the people who were "hypnotised" who I have a problem with. All of them (there were at least 20-25) bar one were in yr 12. No kidding. I guess it's one of those "last hurrahs." All of them are TC/exhibitionists/have something to prove. (In a way, it's my own last hurrah; the hypnotist came in yr 10, but not last year, and it was my own last chance to experience a hypnotic show, at school, anyway.)

Because of this, they all tried desperately hard to please, wholeheartedly acting their assigned parts, which led to the "hypnotist" choosing those people trying hardest deepest under hypnosis, which were the people who were seeking attention.

This may sound harsh, but it was very obvious that these people
1) are actors
2) were acting
3) were loving it.

I would love to see what real hypnosis is like, but I'm supposing that I won't find it on a stage. Funnily enough, many of the guys on stage ended up topless - any excuse will do. Some of what they had to do was a little revolting/extreme; they were "ordered" to "grab the person nearest them - regardless of sex - and begin to kiss and cuddle them" (I quote!). Too bad so many people go into it...I'm not entirely disappointed though - it was worth the laughs (and the cringes).

In other, equally superficial news - my crush has entered the building! That is, my joint yr 11/12 D&T class (I'm the only yr 12 in the class - long story*- we share the same teacher.) No kidding! The funniest thing is, everyone else hates him - I've heard them say so. Mierda comica. (Not sure if that even translates, but it does in my mind).

Is this a sign? (I'm not holding out on it.)

x
Just a girl

*Long story: last year there were 5 people in the class, including me, and it was just a yr 11 class. At the end of the year, 3 of those people dropped changed to VCE. And then there were two. Because of this year's timetable, they combined the yr 11 and 12 classes, and it was Miss SC and I...until there was one (me) and one who left (Miss SC). So now it's just me and a bunch of yr 11s who don't do anything. It's so funny, all they do is sit around and bitch and gossip. Highly amusing.
